Spicy Quinoa Cleanse

Spring cleanse season is here.  A time to kick your metabolisms in to gear for growth and renewal with seasonal radishes and spicy greens.  In this recipe, digestive fires awaken with tart lemon while cayenne opens circulatory pathways to deliver nutrients throughout the body.  Quinoa combined with rice offers grounding and balanced energy.


1 1/2 cup Red Quinoa

1/2 cup Jasmine white rice
1/2 tsp Cayenne
(smoked pepper flakes)
Breakfast radishes, sliced
1/2 Lemon

Start quinoa and rice with 4 cups of water and bring to a slow boil.  Add cayenne.  Cook with a lid until liquid is absorbed and grains are tender, about 20 minutes.  Squeeze lemon juice over greens and toss with radish slivers.  Serve as a warm dish by tossing arugula with grains just before serving (allow to cool a bit first to gently wilt the greens), or for a salad - plate cold quinoa over a bed of greens.

Working with whole cayenne peppers:  The heat of the pepper is generally greater near the stem where the seeds cluster, and lessens toward the bottom tip.  To distribute the heat, use a spoon to crush the entire dried pepper into flakes and remove the stem.  If you'd like less heat, just crush the bottom tip.
